Hijacked by migrants tanker emerged in Malta waters UPDATE
UPDATE Mar 28: Tanker was stormed by Maltese special operations unit team, supported by patrol boats and a helicopter, early Mar 28. The tanker was docked at Valetta. 5 migrants believed to be leaders were arrested, 103 people will be taken to the migrant's reception center, to be verifying asylum status later.
Mar 28: Tanker re-appeared in Maltese waters early Mar 28, sailing at reduced speed. Malta authorities said they’ve sent the military to the hijacked tanker. Last tanker’s Captain message was “We’re in pirates hands!”. The tanker was ordered by Libyan CG to change course and pick up migrants.
Mar 27 news: Product tanker ELHIBLU 1 while en route from Turkey to Tripoli Libya, on March 26 was diverted to distressed migrants boat off the Libyan coast. Tanker picked up 108 migrants and resumed sailing to Tripoli, migrants to be landed at Tripoli. Several hours later, tanker changed course and headed north, in direction of Malta or Lampedusa. Communications with tanker lost, migrants possibly hijacked tanker and crew after they were informed about their return to Libya. As of 1600 UTC Mar 27, no AIS during last 16 hours. Italian Interior Minister Salvini is closely monitoring the situation.
