Tanker lost control while passing under bridge, Volga river, Astrakhan
Product tanker SYNERGY 2 suffered engines failure while proceeding upstream on Volga river in Astrakhan port area, shortly after tanker passed under railway bridge, at 2039 Moscow time May 8. Tanker with 5000 tons of heavy fuel on board is en route to Azov port, Azov sea. To avoid collision with bridge, tanker dropped two anchors, but it didn’t prevent drift, and tanker drifted below bridge, some 150 meters downstream from fairway bridge arch, blocking all traffic. Tanker was removed from fairway in the morning May 9 and returned to Astrakhan, for inspection. No damages, no leak reported.
