Five cruise ships at Palma

Five cruise ships in port at Palma

Thousands of tourists from five cruise ships flocked into Palma de Mallorca’s old town on April 12 – a mighty big crowd for so early in the season. The five cruise ships – MEIN SCHIFF, AIDA AURA, COSTA MEDITERRANEA, COSTA VICTORIA and MSC ORCHESTRA – have a total capacity of nearly 11,000 passengers and had all docked on the same day. Only a few days previously, the locals had demonstrated against the arrival of the world’s largest cruise liner, the SYMPHONY OF THE SEAS. For years, Palma’s municipal authorities have been trying to ease the pressure on the town’s tourist attractions and infrastructure by spreading the arrival of cruise ships more evenly throughout the week. The fact that five ships arrived on a single day before the start of the high season shows that a lot more coordination is needed between cruise operators and attractive ports of call. It is a highly emotive issue, as protests in other cruise ship destinations have shown.
