Pirates attack thwarted with hot water, Philippines

General cargo ship KUDOS 1 was attacked by armed men in three boats at night Feb 16 off Sibago Island, Basilan, near Zamboanga City, southwest Mindanao, Philippines. According to media news, attackers were after hijacking crew members for ransom. They fired upon the ship, which sailed from Davao City, Mindanao, with cargo of steel bars. Attack was repelled by crew splashing hot water mixed with oil on attackers, said the Captain of the ship. Two crew were slightly injured. The ship issued distress signal, Philippine Navy and CG escorted her to Zamboanga.
