Russian scientific ship breached in the Antarctic, confusing reports

Multi purpose cargo ship IVAN PAPANIN was breached in the Antarctic in heavy ice on Feb 6 or earlier, near Indian Antarctic ice station Bharati, with ensuing water ingress. According to Russian Arctic and Antarctic Institute statement, based on Indian emergency message, all people on board were evacuated, some 100 people, including scientists and crew. According to ship’s owner, Murmansk Shipping Company, all people remained on board, the ship contacted underwater object, but managed to get to, and to moor, to an ice pier, water ingress localized and is under control. There’s no danger to ship, crew and scientists on board, added MSC in its’ statement.
