Ferry tragedy still unfolding, Philippines

Ferry MERCRAFT 3 sank off Polillo Island, Quezon province, southeast Luzon, Philippines, in the morning Dec 21. Coast Guard received distress message at 1120 LT, ferry with some 258 people on board was caught in rough seas and sank, being battered by high waves and strong wind. As of 1400 UTC Dec 21, 166 people reported rescued, 4 found dead, 81 are missing. SAR is under way with deployment of CG and Navy ships and boats, local fishing boats and all merchant ships which happen to be in the area. Ferry MERCRAFT 3 (see photo from Mercraft Facebook page) wasn’t found in available ships databases, it is operated by POLILLO STAR FERRY Company.
