Cargo ship hit rock, sinking, 16 crew rescued, Taiwan Strait

General cargo ship QUAN HAI 88 issued distress singal in the afternoon Oct 16 in Quanzhou prefecture waters, Fujian Province, Taiwan Strait. The ship hit underwater rocks and suffered hull breach, with portside list, which achieved 20 degrees. 16 crew were rescued by patrol boat, ship’s fate yet unknown. QUAN HAI was in load, en route from Dongguan, Guangdong to Jiaxing, Zhejiang. Accident reportedly was caused by stormy weather and navigational error.
