Dredger sank after collision with tanker, 5 missing, Singapore Straits
Product tanker KARTIKA SEGARA collided with brand new hopper dredger JBB DE RONG 19 at around 0040 LT Sep 13 in Singapore Straits about 1.7 nm southwest of Sister Islands, Singapore, while proceeding in opposite directions – dredger was transiting westbound, tanker was sailing eastbound, leaving Singapore, bound for Bau Bau. Dredger capsized and partially sank, tanker suffered starboard bow damage, but remained seaworthy and was brought to anchor at Eastern Anchorage, Singapore. From dredger’s 12 crew, 7 were rescued by Singapore Police boat, 5 went missing. Tanker’s crew unharmed.
