Korean destroyer rescued Yemeni cargo ship, Gulf of Aden
UKMTO informed the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) Headquarters in Bahrain on Sep 2, that a Yemeni merchant ship MV Asad Addin had been drifting for three days due to a damaged fuel tank. CTF 151 immediately tasked the closest unit to the area, ROKS Dae Jo Yeong, to conduct SOLAS operation.
There were 32 crew and 37 passengers onboard, 5 of which were sick for several reasons, including bone fractures and pneumonia. They were immediately provided medical assistance, water, and fresh food by the medical team and crew of ROKS Dae Jo Yeong.
The merchant vessel was towed 20 nautical miles off Aden, Yemen, to a harbour where coordination between Yemeni Coast Guard officials and CMF ensured a safe hand over of the crew to the Yemeni Coast Guard and onward travel to further medical assistance.
