Aug 11: As of 0400 UTC Aug 11, vessel was still aground. Laker is in ballast, the St. Marys River traffic remains closed from the Soo Locks to 6 Mile Point.
Says USCG: The Army Corp of Engineers conducted an assessment of the river bottom around the vessel. Contracted divers conducted an initial assessment of the vessel's stern and determined that it is structurally sound. Oil Spill Removal Organization was hired to place boom near vessel to protect the environment as a precaution. Grand River Navigation was to present to the U.S. Coast Guard salvage plan for review and approval on Aug 10.

Bulk carrier CALUMET ran aground at 2340 LT Aug 9 on St. Marys River in the US zone at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, while en route from ESSAR Steel in Sault Ste. Marie to Brevort, Michigan. According to AIS track, vessel most probably, ran aground after some mechanical trouble which disabled laker, and she strayed off fairway. As of 1230 UTC Aug 10, vessel was still aground. No leak reported.
