Tanker taken to Brest after breakdown

Product tanker WHITSTAR early in the morning Aug 3 reported to MRCC Etel, France, that vessel is disabled and adrift after mechanical failure some 35 nm west of Penmarch, France, Bay of Biscay. Tanker loaded with oil product was en route from Netherlands to Spain. SAR ship ABEILLE BOURBON (IMO:9308687) was sent to assist, tanker’s manager was ordered either to fix problem and restore sailing until 1200 CET, or contract towage. Crew managed to restore moving, but tanker had to interrupt voyage and sailed to Brest for repairs, escorted by tug. According to AIS track, tanker reached Brest and was brought to anchor at around 2100 CET same day, sailing under own power (at some 7-9 knots speed). According to France official statement, tanker had to contract towage. Understood owner will pay for towage, whether actual towage took place, or not.
