212 kilo cocaine bust on MSC container ship, Turkey

June 14, 2017 at 08:10 by Mikhail Voytenko in Maritime Security

Turkish police made a statement on June 14, on a drug bust on board of a container ship. It came as a result of multinational efforts to break the drug ring, which used to smuggle cocaine to Europe via container ships. Container ship was boarded by police in Dardanelles, and brought to Ambarli, Istanbul. Bags with 212 kilos of pure cocaine were found in a container, which was transported to Spain from Brazil, and then loaded on board of a container ship bound for Turkey. Turkish officials didn’t reveal the name of the vessel, but according to available information, it’s most probably, MSC DONATA, which is presently (morning June 14) docked at Gemlik port. She transited Dardanelles on June 13 and after a short stay at Ambarli, sailed to Gemlik. Prior to Turkay call, vessel called three Spanish ports, Fos and Piraeus. On photos container ship moments before police boarded it, and bags with cocaine. Photos taken from Turkish media, letters on board smudged, to prevent vessel’s identification. Hopefully, the crew weren’t involved in drug trafficking, at least there is no mentioning of crew suspects.
