Tanker ZIRCONE fire in engine room, Gulf of Riga, Baltic Sea

Fire erupted in engine room of product tanker ZIRCONE at around 0730 UTC May 25, in Gulf of Riga, Latvia, shortly after vessel sailed from Riga Latvia, bound for Denmark. Disabled vessel started to drift, tugs and CG patrol boats were sent to tanker, helicopter with thermal video found high temperature in superstructure. Master didn’y ask for evacuation, all 17 crew remain on board, fighting fire by own means. At 1300 UTC vessel was still adrift with two patrol boats and a tug nearby. Vessel is loaded with 7,000 tons of diesel oil.
