$250 mil worth 5.5 tons of cocaine found on bulker KRAKEN I

Ecuadorian Police raided bulk carrier KRAKEN I on May 11 and seized record 5.53 tons of cocaine, stashed in 5070 packages, packed in 176 jute bags, said to be of whooping $250 mil street value. Vessel arrived at Santa Elena, Ecuador, on May 4, to load a cargo bound for Panama, and then sail to Europe. Vessel anchored off Libertad Yacht Club, which in itself was like a red flashlight for local anti drug agents. Multinational gang of some 20 people, including Spanish, Colombian, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Honduras nationalities, was arrested. Understood bags were found in double bottom, probably in ballast tanks. No mentioning of crew and ship’s management involvement yet, but is hard to believe, that the drugs were loaded into vessel’s hard-to-get-into compartments without crew’s help or participation. Judging from photo, crew were involved, maybe all of them. Photos from El Telegrafo eltelegrafo.com.ec
