Bulk carrier ALEX A broke optic cable obeying Traffic Control commands
Bulk carrier ALEX A broke Telefonica fibre optic cable, one of the two connecting Ceuta with mainland Spain, while anchoring in the morning May 12. Traffic Control Center, as it became known, gave ship’s Master wrong coordinates, and directed bulk carrier to prohibited for anchoring area. Master obeyed and brought bulk carrier to anchor. Soon after that, Traffic Control Center realized that it gave wrong position, and directed bulk carrier to a new one. Bulk carrier moved to new position, but cable was broken. Now Spanish authorities blame Master for it, because he had charts with established safe and prohibited zones. Authorities require from owner a 500,000 eu guarantee deposit, bulk carrier said to be under detention until bail is deposited.
