Euronav’s VLCC ALEX refloated
May 5 UPDATE: According to AIS track, supertanker was refloated in the afternoon May 4, but as of 0100 ICT May 5 she was still near grounding site (at anchor according to one of the AIS websites), maybe for check before next move, which is unknown. At least three tugs were deployed, it is not known yet, as of morning May 5, if ALEX is to proceed under own power, or under tow. Port of destination is, so far, also unknown. According to Euronav statement dated Apr 28, SMIT Singapore Pte Ltd. and PT Samudera Indonesia were contracted to undertake the refloating operation, including lightering of the vessel by ship to ship transfer of cargo.
Euronav’s laden VLCC aground, Karimata Strait
VLCC ALEX ran aground in the afternoon Apr 12 in South China Sea in position 01 56S 108 08E, some 40 nm north of Pulau Belitung Island, Indonesia, Karimata Strait, while en route from Galveston USA to Ningbo China. As of 0300 UTC Apr 14 vessel was still aground. Tanker’s in full cargo load. No leak, no hull breaches reported. On a photo from Euronav sister-ship ANTIGONE.
