MSC MIRELLA adrift in Sea of Crete after engine failure UPDATE

UPDATE: vessel resumed sailing at around 2000 UTC Apr 20, under own power, according to AIS. No towage noticed. Presumably, crew managed to fix and restart engine, probably with the help of MSC RAVENNA, technical or by providing spare parts.

Container ship MSC MIRELLA suffered engine failure at around 1230 UTC Apr 20, 7 nm southwest of southwestern tip of Milos Island, Greece, Sea of Crete, while en route from Piraeus to Mersin Turkey. As of 1630 UTC vessel was still drifting, with MSC RAVENNA nearby (IMO 9484431). According to Master’s report to Greek CG, crew may fix the problem by own means, no assistance requested. Another MSC vessel, MSC RAVENNA, was directed to disabled MSC MIRELLA. Greek CG sent patrol boat to monitor development.
