RIGA under tow, English Canal

March 20, 2017 at 04:03 by Mikhail Voytenko in Accidents

General cargo vessel RIGA in the morning Mar 19 reported engine cooling system failure north of Fecamp, France, English Canal. Crew tried to fix problem, but failed, and brought vessel to anchor. Vessel’s owner tried to contract salvage company of his choice, for towage, but French authorities found vessel to be a threat to shipping in the area with daylight fading, and ordered French salvage tug Abeille Languedoc (IMO 7710525) to carry out towage. Owner had to obey. At 0400 UTC Mar 20 convoy was approaching Caen Anchorage. Salvage tug Abeille Liberte (IMO 9308699) was also deployed, on the first stage, so it should be interesting to know if owner will have to pay for Abeille Liberte, too. RIGA said to be en route from Dunkirk to Caen with cargo of ore.
