SIGMA aground, Livorno Jan 15 UPDATE

0400 UTC Jan 15 UPDATE: vessel is still aground. Vessel in ballast was at anchor, anchor dragged, vessel started to drift towards shallow water. Authorities said vessel was warned and offered assistance, but Ukrainian Master rejected tugs and assured them he’ll take situation under control. He failed though, to heave anchor and move the ship to safer waters.
0700 UTC Jan 14 UPDATE: vessel is still aground with no tugs nearby. Correction: vessel is in ballast.

General cargo vessel SIGMA with cargo of grain was pushed aground by strong wind with guts up 50 knots, at Livorno beach, at around noon Jan 13. Exact details of grounding unknown, understood vessel was at anchor, anchor dragged, port tugs were late with attempts to avoid grounding and tow vessel off coast. No leak yet, refloating hampered by stormy weather. Crew remain on board. On photo grounded SIGMA.
