​ North Korean freighter in danger of sinking: Jan 12 UPDATE vessel sank

Jan 12 UPDATE: 26 crew went into lifeboats and were rescued by Japan Coast Guard, vessel capsized and sank.

North Korean general cargo vessel CHONG GEN with 26 crew on board issued distress signal in the evening Tokyo time Jan 11, reporting water ingress and danger of sinking, in position some 30 nm southwest of Fukue Island, Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture, East China Sea. Japan CG patrol boat approached distressed vessel, which was anchored, and found no immediate danger of sinking. Vessel developed a list, understood there is a hull breach. Japan CG is on standby, ready to evacuate crew if necessary. Vessel was en route from China, most probably to North Korea. According to some sources, she was loaded with rice. Most probably, vessel sailed into Japan waters after she was troubled.
