Ferry SANSOVINO 9 crew poisoned, 3 died 1 critical, Messina
A tragedy occurred on board of Siremar’s ferry SANSOVINO in the afternoon Nov 29. At the time of an accident ferry was docked at Norimberga pier, Messina, Italy. 5 crew were tasked with cleansing fuel tank. Sudden release of toxic fumes from oil residue killed three, one was hospitalized in critical condition, and as it became known later, nine crew suffered intoxication, including those who died, most probably other crew hurried to assist, and inhaled poisonous gas. Understood but not confirmed, that among perished was Chief Officer. As of 0200 UTC Nov 30 vessel was at Messina, investigation is under way.
