Container ship MAERSK PATRAS fire UPDATE
Nov 3 UPDATE: vessel was docked in Las Palmas in the afternoon Nov 2. Fire erupted in engine room and was extinguished by activated fire fighting system. Fire damaged generators and engine, vessel was disabled and asked for assistance.
Container ship MAERSK PATRAS reported disabled after fire early in the morning Nov 1, some 90 nm east-south-east of Las Palmas, Canary Islands, while en route from Algeciras Spain to Conakry Guinea. Vessel started to drift and assumedly, requested assistance, tug SALVANGUARD (IMO 9276664) was contracted or sent by authorities to assist. According to AIS track, MAERSK PATRAS was taken on tow at around 0100 UTC Nov 2, caravan started moving towards Las Palmas. As of 0500 UTC Nov 2, caravan was some 60 nm southeast of Las Palmas, maintaining some 6 knots speed. No information on fire, whether it started in containers or in engine room. No information on scale and character of damages. It may be anything, from fire in engine room to a major containers fire, which could compel crew to abandon superstructure.
