Reefer SPRING BAY sad story

Sept. 22, 2016 at 13:50 by Mikhail Voytenko in Maritime Security

Aug 10 report:
Reefer SPRING BAY spotted adrift off Mozambique coast northeast of Maputo, since Aug 6. Vessel left Maputo on Aug 3, bound for Alang for dismantling, and was proceeding at a reduced speed not exceeding 5-6 knots. No tug spotted nearby. ETA Alang Aug 20. Vessel was at Maputo port from late Jan, crew weren’t paid, as of June, during 6 months. A new crew were to take reefer to Alang. All opinions of crews employed by owner and manager AQUASHIP LTD, Latvia, posted in Russian-language maritime Forum, are exceptionally bad. Wage delays, cheating, overpricing for any service rendered, you name it.
Aug 30 UPDATE:
Reefer suffered engine failure iff Inhambane, Mozambique, but fixed the problem and headed for Maputo, for repairs.
Sep 22 UPDATE:
According to Maputo daily “Noticias” Sep 20 report, the hapless reefer was arrested by Mozambican authorities for port’s fees debts. The 15 crew understood to be Indian, as well as owner, meaning that after vessel was sold for scrap, foul play if any, was initiated by a new owner. Authorities suspect vessel was to be intentionally sunk somewhere in Indian ocean, in order to get insurance, said to be some two million USD. Vessel fled Mozambican waters to avoid paying debts, about 11,950 USD. Whether old owner has anything to do with this story, or he’s out of the game after selling vessel, is unknown.
