Oil rig aground on Isle of Lewis coast, Scotland

Aug. 8, 2016 at 14:07 by Mikhail Voytenko in Accidents

Drilling rig TRANSOCEAN WINNER was pushed aground on Isle of Lewis western coast, Scotland, in the morning Aug 7, after towing line was broken up in stormy weather, tug ALP FORWARD failed to restore towing line in severe weather conditions. Rig was under tow without personnel on board, but with 280 tons of diesel oil. No leak reported so far, understood salvage is under way. According to AIS information, AKP FORWARD with rig on tow was heading for Malta. Isle of Lewis officials blame UK Government in this recent grounding incident, because Government was “ignoring every warning” received in recent years regarding cuts to the number of Emergency Rowing Vessels (ERVs) in Scotland.
