Spirit of 1770 fire, all 46 people safe
All 46 people, among them 42 passengers, have escaped the Spirit of 1770 after a fire broke out in the engine room and the tour became engulfed in flames on May 11, 2016. An emergency call was made at 3.58pm (AEST) 10 miles from Lady Musgrave Island, Great Barrier Reef off the central Queensland coast. All people aboard went into life rafts, and later were picked up by volunteer rescue boat and taken back to Gladstone. No injures reported. Boat reportedly sank. The boat had left Gladstone for a day-trip in the morning, with most of the passengers being Chinese nationals.
