Container ship SAFMARINE KURAMO attacked, hijacked and released in Nigerian waters

Feb. 6, 2016 at 02:51 by Mikhail Voytenko in Maritime Security

Container ship SAFMARINE KURAMO was reported attacked and boarded by pirates late at night Feb 5 in Nigerian waters. Nigerian authorities informed MAP Singapore, that the vessel was released early in the morning Feb 6. Nigerian authorities said that the Nigerian Navy or law enforcement forces secured the release, but most probably, pirates just fled, after robbing crew and the vessel, and maybe, looting the cargo. All 25 crew, comprised of nationals from the Philippines, South Africa, India, United Kingdom, and Thailand, are reportedly safe. No other information available.
Vessel is en route from Pointe Noire, Congo, to Port Onne, Nigeria.
Comment:
Maybe it’s a new turn in local piracy caused by oil price downfall. Hijacking tankers with the purpose of stealing the cargo is not profitable any more, so pirates probably, are looking for other prey.
