"TATOOSH" destroys the reef

Jan. 30, 2016 at 17:53 by Claudio Ritossa in Accidents

The yacht of the co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, has ravaged a reef in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands, destroying much of the precious marine eco-system.

The "TATOOSH" ventured within a protected area in the "West Bay" archipelago, ruining the anchor chain with about 80 percent of the coral reefs in that area.

The incident, according to a statement issued by Allen, through his investment company Vulcan, would happen on 14 January, but only recently it has been informed.

It is not yet clear whether the billionaire was on board at the time of impact.

Paul Allen, 63, now faces a fine of $ 600,000, a figure even excessive for one of the richest men in the world.

The incident, however, threatens to tarnish his image as "environmentalist".

Ironically, the former partner of Bill Gates, who in 2000 left his post of directors, but remains a shareholder of Microsoft, has created a foundation for the protection of the marine ecosystem and against overfishing.
