Product tanker Joaquim hijacked and released, cargo stolen, Malacca Strait

Product tanker Joaquim was reported by owner to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) as missed, probably hijacked, in the evening Aug 8. Vessel’s last known position was in waters off Port Dickson, Malaysia, southeast of Port Klang, Malacca Strait. Search operation was launched, at 0845 Kuala Lumpur time Aug 9 plane engaged in searching spotted disabled vessel some 14 nm off Pulau Rupat island, Malacca Strait. 10 crew suffered minor beatings, vessel was staying at anchor. Pirates stole tanker’s cargo, 3500 tons of oil costing some $700,000. Tanker was en route from Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia to Langkawi, Malaysia, north of Penang island.
