Barges broke free from caravan, Illinois
In the afternoon June 14 four barges broke free from a caravan of eight barges pushed by a tug Joyce Hale, reported US Coast Guard. Two barges were recovered by the tug, but two the other two drifted into the protection cells of Starved Rock Lock and Dam. Those two barges contain no hazardous material: one is carrying corn and the other is carrying sand.
The Army Corps of Engineers have temporarily closed the lock, but preliminary investigations have not revealed any damage to the lock or barges. Recovering of the barges is under way.
