UK cross-Solent ferry operator is set to order its largest passenger car ferry to date. The 1000 passenger capacity, 174 car capacity vessel is part of a £45m investment by the ferry operators new owner – Balfour Beatty. The 90m x 19m vessel will operate between Portsmouth’s Camber Dock and Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight.

A total of 28 shipyards in the UK and Europe – from Scotland to Turkey are on the running for the contract. The yards are now being shortlisted and a decision on which yard will build the vessel will be made shortly. However the new ferry will not be built in Portsmouth as the local shipyard declined to tender for the job!

The new ferry will be the most environmentally friendly cross Solent ferry yet built and will feature a dual fuel Diesel engine plant capable of burning both Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) and LNG.
