Livestock carrier with 634 cattle on board on fire, Indonesia
Livestock carrier under the name of KM Cargo Asia Raya or KM Asia Raya caught fire shortly after leaving Kupang port, Timor, Indonesia, at around 0100 LT May 15. Vessel was some five miles off Kupang when the fire started. Reportedly vessel was overloaded and suddenly listed, panicked crew fired rescue flares, sparks from flares ignited fodder, and shortly afterwords, vessel was engulfed in fire. Vessel had a flock of 634 cattle on board, ox and cows. 37 crew were rescued. Some of cattle jumped overboard, some managed to get to the shore. Reportedly rescue of the cattle is still under way, vessel is afloat without risk of sinking. No cargo vessel under the abovementioned names is found in databases.
