Tanker hijacked in Malacca Strait

8 pirates armed with guns attacked and hijacked product tanker Ocean Energy at around 2230 Singapore time May 2 east of Port Klang, Malaysia, Malacca Strait. Vessel was en route from Singapore to Myanmar. Pirates ordered vessel to move to position 02 19N 101 40E, some 40 nm east of Port Klang, where she was anchored. Another vessel came alongside, tanker’s cargo was transferred to that vessel, some 2000 tons of gas oil. Pirates left tanker at around 0430 Singapore time May 3, destroying navigational and radio equipment and stealing crew’s valuables and cash. Crew safe. Tanker is returning to Singapore.
