Freighter Floreana aground, Galapagos Islands, authorities fear pollution
General cargo vessel Floreana ran aground on Jan 28 en route from San Cristobal to Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Pacific ocean. Vessel has some 1400 tons of cargo on board, mostly food, and around 50 tons of fuel. Salvage under way, no spill reported. Authorities are trying to pump off the fuel as soon as possible, as the main threat to Galapagos unique environment. On photos grounded Floreana, already surrounded by booms.
