Maltese tanker Sun Oil I under arrest in Tripoli for alleged oil smuggling
Maltese bunker tanker Sun Oil I with 5 crew on board was detained by Libyan authorities on Jan 2 in Tripoli, on an accusation of an attempt to smuggle oil. Detention became known on Jan 24 after Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press-release saying that there were two Bulgarian sailors on board. Bulgaria requested from Libya clarification of the case and release of Bulgarian citizen. According to Bulgaria, disabled Sun Oil I was towed to Tripoli by an Italian freighter after sending distress signal, so presumably, vessel wasn’t involved in oil smuggling. Nationalities of the rest of the crew are unknown.
