Tanker Maersk Etienne vs. bulk carrier Coral Opal, Baltic sea
Product tanker Maersk Etienne and bulk carrier Coral Opal collided at around 2030 LT Jan 18 in Irben Strait, Gulf of Riga, Baltic Sea, in MRCC Riga, Latvia, zone. Judging from photos, Coral Opal struck by her bow the stern of Maersk Etienne. Both vessels suffered serious damages, Coral Opal suffered a breach in fore ballast tank area with small water ingress, and reportedly, there’s an oil leak. Coral Opal was directed to Ventspils road, Maersk Etienne was directed to Riga, for survey and investigation. MRCC Riga said dangerous maneuver caused the collision. Bulk carrier was en route from Riga to Amsterdam with cargo of coal, Maersk Etienne was en route from Rouen France to Riga.
