General cargo vessel Thor Commander on tow of capesize Xinfa Hai, Coral sea
General cargo vessel Thor Commander reported engine failure and drift towards Big Barrier Reef protected areas in Coral sea off Queensland coast, on Jan 11 night. AMSA, under the Protection of the Sea (Powers of Intervention) Act 1981, directed Chinese capesize bulk carrier Xinfa Hai (IMO 9255024, dwt 174766)) to distressed freighter ordering her to take Thor Commander on tow to prevent drifting, until tug arrival. The owners of Thor Commander contracted the tug. Thor Commander was taken on tow by Xinfa Hai on Jan 12, with the help of a police boat Lyle M Hoey.
