Ferry Pulau Payar fire, Penang Island
Ferry Pulau Payar with about 300 passengers on board suffered fire in engine room in the morning Jan 9, shortly after leaving ferry pier in Georgetown, Penang Island, Malaysia, en route to ferry pier in mainland Butterworth, some 20 minutes sailing. According to media, there was quite a chaos on board. Vessel managed to return to Georgetown under own power, no one was hurt. I wouldn’t mention this accident at all if it wasn’t ferry line I know – can’t count how many times I’ve been crossing the strait on board of those vessels. Glad it wasn’t serious, though smoke over troubled ferry seemed quite impressive.
