Cement carrier Cemfjord capsized, 8 crew missing, Orkney Islands
Overturned hull of cement carrier Cemfjord was spotted by a passing ferry in the Pentland Firt, Orkney Islands, at around 1430 UTC Jan 3. Search and rescue operation was immediately launched, engaging four lifeboats, two helicopters and vessels in the area, but no survivors or bodies were found during daytime. Last available AIS signals are timed 0600 and 1300 UTC Jan 2, speed 9 and 5 knots respectively, Pentland Firt, en route from Aalborg Denmark to Runcorn in Cheshire, with cargo of cement. 8 crew is probably Polish. The weather was said to be stormy, most probably cargo shifted, causing the loss of stability and capsizing.
