Explosion in bulk carrier AKAKI hold
Explosion occurred in Hold no.3 of reportedly, bulk carrier AKAKI, at around 1330 LT Dec 28. Vessel loaded with maize, bound for Vietnam, was anchored inside Paranagua Bay on anchorage 1, several cables off berths, to take bunker. Explosion believed to be caused by gas generated by maize kept under high temperature, combined with recent fumigation gas, or by malpractice of the crew. It is understood, that the explosion didn’t cause fire, vessel is under observation by specialists, to be surveyed later for sea worthiness.
