ESTRADEN with Flettner rotor is underway

The RoRo ship ESTRADEN has become the second vessel in the world that is equipped with an innovative Flettner rotor. Recently the Finnish marine engineering company Norsepower announced that its Rotor Sail Solution has been successfully installed on the ESTRADEN and currently is undergoing sea trials.

The principle of Norsepower’s Rotor Sail Solution is similar to the one that was developed by Anton Flettner at the end of the 1920's in Germany. The exhaust boiler of the ship drives a steam turbine which in turn drives the rotor. The excess energy that the wind creates on the rotor is used for the ship's propulsion. This auxiliary wind propulsion system significantly reduces fuel consumption. When the wind conditions are good, the Rotor Sail system steps in saving vessel's fuel and reducing emissions. The innovative Rotor Sail system can be mounted on any new vessels as well as retrofitted on existing ships.
