10-million baht ($ 310,000) 25-meter long diving vessel burned out in Phuket’s Chalong Harbor during the night Sep 12. Vessel berthed in the marina caught fire at around 0200 LT, which soon put the whole vessel ablaze. Firefighters not so much fought fire on diving vessel, as tried to protect other boats and yachts in the marina. Strong wind and explosions of cooking-gas and oxygen cylinders made firefighting on board of the vessel impossible. Diving vessel was towed by the police out of marina and sank some 700 meters from the shore. Vessel belongs to Andaman Ocean Safari Co., confusing reports on the name, it’s either Choke Somboon 15 or Choksomboon. Fire said to be caused by electrical circuit. Normally there were three crew on board, but this time there was only one, a Burmese, who jumped into the sea and escaped. Photo of the burning vessel from Phuketwan.
