American Spirit refloated

Bulk carrier American Spirit was refloated in the morning Sep 5 after offloading 5,700 tons of her cargo. Inspection didn’t find any damages, vessel was allowed to sail.

Bulk carrier American Spirit ran aground in the evening Sep 4 in Straits of Mackinac, Lake Huron, at Round Island Passage, located between Mackinac Island and Round Island, reported USCG. Vessel is en route to Gary, Indiana, with some 60,000 tons of iron ore on board, she grounded on a muddy bottom, no damages reported. According to the crew, grounding was caused by strong wind, which pushed the vessel against the southern border of the channel. USCG said traffic is not affected, locals report channel is closed for freighters, but open for ferry. At 0500 UTC Sep 5 vessel was in the same position. Bulk carrier Sam Laud (IMO 7390210) is taking on part of cargo from the American Spirit.
