Europe’s biggest bascule bridge to arise

At this weekend dozens of specialists were working on installation of the large segments transported from Wilhelmshaven for building of a new bascule bridge in Hamburg.

The bridge weighing about 250 tons and its folding parts of 650 tons have been set up successfully. The bridge and folding segments were prepared in Wilhelmshaven and loaded to a pontoon for transportation to Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg. In the mounting of the new bridge are involved several vehicle cranes as well as the Danish floating crane SAMSON.

New bascule bridge will be the biggest of its kind in Europe. It has to separate the rail and road traffics in order to improve the traffic flow. The bridge is expected to be operational in 2015. The costs of the building amount to 150 million EUR. The old lift bridge built in 1934 will be demolished after the new one will be taken into operation.
