​Cargo vessel VIET LONG sinks off Maldives

Last week the Vietnamese general cargo vessel VIET LONG ran aground off Maldives and reportedly is sinking or sank.

According to the reports the vessel was refloated by the Coast Guard and anchored not far from the place of incident. However, the vessel started taking on water in cargo holds and its engine room. As the weather got worse on the 10th of June the vessel drifted to the sea. The crew could not manage the ingress of water. Eight persons of the crew members were evacuated by the Coast Guard, 12 crew members were trying to get control over the vessel, but were evacuated later as well. All crew members were safely transported to Male.

Due to the stormy weather the salvage operation of the VIET LONG was suspended. There was reported an oil spill into the water.

According to the latest reports the vessel submarged, the current condition of the cargo vessel is unknown.
