Update: Search for missing yachtsmen resumed

May 21, 2014 at 09:45 by Svitlana Slavina in Accidents

The US Coast Guard resumed a searching operation for four British sailors missing in the North Atlantic Ocean since last Friday (see our previous news).

The initial hunt lasted 53 hours and only an overturned vessel was found by the container ship MAERSK KURE. Yet the discovered hull was not positively identified as the disappeared CHEEKI RAFIKI. The US Coast Guard called the search off on Sunday claiming there was no chance to find the missing sailors.

The family members of the missing yachtsmen addressed a petition to the US authorities to restart the search. Within 36 hours the petition gained nearly 200,000 signatures and the US Guard resumed the search operation early on Tuesday. A flotilla of about 40 small sailing boats joined the hunt having sailed to the remote area where the CHEEKI RAFIKI believed to have drifted since it sunk on Friday.

UPDATE: Crews from merchant ships like PREMIUM DO BRASIL, AM HAMBURG, BOW FLORA, CHEM VENUS and INDEPENDENT ACCORD are involved in the search for British yachtsmen. See below to get an impression of the current marine traffic and the search activities.
