MAERSK KURE discovers upturned vessel, 4 yachtsmen missing
On Friday the 16th of May, the US Coast Guard received a distressed call from the sailing boat CHEEKI RAFIKI. The transatlantic sailing yacht with 4 persons onboard was on its way from Antigua to the UK when the vessel began to sink. After two days were spent to find the missing yachtsmen, the US Coast Guard called off a searching operation.
The container vessel MAERSK KURE found an overturned vessel in the area where the sailing boat could have drifted to. As reported by the container ship there were no signs of life aboard the boat and due to the sea state the Maersk vessel didn’t investigate the capsized boat. A spokesman for the US Coast Guard commented on the actions of the MAERSK KURE explaining that the container vessel doesn’t have the maneuverability and capability to be involved in the rescue operations.
The owners of the vessel are trying to persuade the US Coast Guard to continue on the search.
