More than 2000 Migrants rescued by Italian ships
The Italian navy and coast guard vessels rescued about 2400 migrants coming from North Africa over the past two days.
As reported by Italian navy, three merchant vessels rescued 2128 migrants off the southern coast of Sicily on March 18th and 268 Eritrean and Syrian migrants were picked up by the coast guard about 10 miles east of the island Lampedusa the following day.
The spokesman for the International Organization for Migration in Italy stated such a flow of migrants to be a very serious emergency and one may expect 2000 more people reaching the coast of Italy in the next days.
Compared to the first months of 2013 the number of migrants coming to Italian shores this year is 10 times higher.
