Grain Carrier and oil barge collided in Houston Channel, Texas
On March 14th the U.S. coast guard was informed about a collision between the cargo vessel GENIUS STAR VII and an oil barge in the Houston Ship Channel, Texas. The cargo vessel was carrying grain and the barge was loaded with 840,000 gallons of fuel oil. There was no report of injuries or pollution, however the both vessels were damaged.
Marine investigators from Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston and marine inspectors were sent to the damaged barge to perform the investigations and to prevent the risk of pollution. Another team of marine investigators from Marine Safety Unit Texas City was dispatched to the GENIUS STAR VII to assess vessel’s damage and to ensure the safety of the environment and the maritime community.
The causes of the incident are currently under investigation.
