7 dead due to explosion in Chinese shipyard

Indian-flagged chemical tanker OAKTREE, currently undergoing repairs in the Haizhou Shipyard in the port of Zhoushan, exploded and caught fire on Tuesday.

7 workers were killed in the accident. Official investigations on the cause of the explosion are ongoing, but it is assumed that an open flame near the cargo tanks provoked the incident.

The ship had been unloaded before the repairs but the cargo tanks probably weren’t properly de-gassed. An oil spill was not reported.
