24 crew members were rescued from bulk carrier Rich Forest after abandoning ship approximately 440 miles west of Guam on December 20.

On January 19 the Coast Guard of Guam was informed of flooding on the board of the Rich Forest. The bulk carrier was on its way to China carrying logs. The crew of the vessel reported the main generator of the vessel had broken down and the vessel was taking on 160 tons of water per hour. Four merchandise vessels were sent to rescue the people from the flooded vessel.

The bulk carrier CS Sunshine completed the rescue of all survivors at 4:40 p.m. and safely brought them aboard without incident. Later the crew of the Rich Forest was taken aboard the Assateague, the vessel of the Coast Guard. The CS Sunshine continued on to its next port of call in Japan.

According to the Coast Guard, the Rich Forest has not sunk yet and remains a hazard to any ship in the area of incident.
